LawnMate's story begins with a veteran. After serving his country in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, Ellsworth 'Van' returned to Northern Virginia and established a family owned lawn service. This lawn care company was built on the same values of discipline, pride, and a commitment to doing the job right that he upheld throughout his service, contributing to the rich lawn care history of the region.

In 1981, Van's son Jim took the reins of the family-owned lawn service and transformed LawnMate into the leading lawn care service in Northern Virginia. This growth earned the trust of thousands of homeowners and garnered recognition from publishers like Consumer Reports. Jim didn't just maintain the lawn care history his father built; he made it even better.

In 2023, Jim passed the family owned lawn service to the next generation — his children Ryan and KC — who are dedicated to preserving the lawn care history of their father while working to enhance and grow the business for a new era in Northern Virginia lawn care.

What makes our family owned lawn service different isn't just its rich lawn care history. It's the people. Some of our crew members have been with us for over 30 years, and they know the neighborhoods of Northern Virginia, these soil types, and many of our customers by name.
